Our Beginnings

Alpha Pregnancy Center started in 1983 as a result of a group of pastors meeting to pray about the high rate of abortions in our city.  As they prayed together, the Lord convicted them to offer His helping hand, love and compassion to women faced with an unplanned pregnancy.  They started the Crisis Pregnancy Center in the basement of First Orthodox Presbyterian Church in the Sunset District of San Francisco.  At the time they offered free pregnancy tests, pregnancy options counseling, and clothing to the women they served. The center continued to grow and they realized there might be a larger need in different neighborhoods, so in 2002 we secured a new location on Mission Street, in the Outer Mission District.  At that time, our name was changed to Alpha Pregnancy Center.

As a result of that move and expanding our services, our daily client intake has more than tripled; allowing us to work with an average of 20 women a day.  Our center has remained true to the original mission to protect life and offer the hope of Christ to families.  In our years of service, we have seen that woman and families facing unplanned pregnancy have some very real challenges ahead of them.  We are compelled to lovingly walk with them through these challenges.  Therefore our services have greatly expanded.  In addition to the pregnancy options counseling we started with, we now offer many needed supplies, education, case management and peer counseling to the woman and families served at Alpha Pregnancy Center.
